United Nations Transition Assistance Group (Namibia) (UNTAG) was a United Nations peacekeeping mission involving Canadians in 1989.

UN Mandate

UNTAG was to supervise the orderly transfer of authority over Namibia from the Republic of South Africa to an independent Namibian government and to supervise the Nov 1989 elections.

Canadian Military Involvement

• 89 Canadian Logistic Unit and other elements of 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (arrived Sep 1989)


• 100 RCMP officers arrived Oct 1989
