What a story this could tell and I assume it was a cherished souvineer of some lucky soldier. A US cross belt plate which has been struck with a Minnie ball. It has pierced the plate and penetrate the lead filled reverse and knocked away one of the steel retaining hooks. Lots of white oxidation to the lead bullet.
