1899 Strathcona Horse Field Service Cap - Attributed to Samuel Howe - Calgary Cowboy

An outstanding Boer War Field Service Cap to the Strathcona Horse. Neatly dated 1899 and War Department marked. The SH went to South Africa wearing these dark blue caps in 1899 and were then issued the Khaki service dress more often seen in photographs.

What makes this particularily exciting is the service number penned inside in indelible purple pencil (as often encountered on uniforms and kit from that era). The number 477 is attributed to 477 Pte Samuel Howe, of Calgary, AB who was born in Montana. He joined the SH in 1900 and served in South Africa with them. Upon enlistment he listed his trade as a Rancher Cowboy!

His docs can be accessed online at the Soldiers of the South African War (Archives of Canada).
